Waltham Abbey gives us two very different types of job on the same day: careful work in the old streets near the abbey and quick, square rooms on the newer edges of town.
Around the abbey, solid walls need breathable materials. Sealing an old wall behind waterproof adhesive and modern grout traps moisture and pushes damp somewhere else, so we use lime friendly products and mechanical fixings where the substrate calls for it.
Original joinery is kept wherever it is sound. Skirtings, architraves and cupboard doors that fit the house are usually worth repairing and repainting rather than replacing with something new that never quite matches.
On the newer estates the priorities flip. Rooms are square, services are easy to find, and the value comes from a better specification rather than extra labour.

A cottage kitchen near the abbey
Solid walls, a flagged floor and a ceiling height that varied by 40mm across the room. We fitted a freestanding style kitchen with a fitted run on one wall only, kept the flags exposed and used a lime compatible plaster where we made good.
Twelve working days, and we reused the original pantry door after stripping and repainting it.
